The US Vice President JD Vance has held face-to-face talks with senior Iranian officials in Islamabad, the highest direct level meeting between the two countries since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
There were three rounds of talks mediated by Pakistan, the final session stretched into the early hours of the morning. But there are some huge obstacles standing in the way, not least the war in Lebanon, where Israel continues to strike Hezbollah, Iran’s most powerful proxy.
More than 200 targets were hit in just the past 24 hours with the death toll now over 2,000. We’ll have more on that in a moment. But first, from Islamabad, here’s Caroline Davis.
A visit many doubted would happen. Vice President J. D. Vance arrived in Islamabad this morning. Red carpet welcomed by Pakistan’s army chief. The first hurdle cleared. A long road ahead.
Security is tight. to get access to the city’s diplomatic enclave, an armed escort to the press center. Pakistan knows the world is watching how it delivers these talks. Walking through this convention center, you can hear people broadcasting in so many different languages. And then right in the heart, all of these screens showing coverage from around the world of what is happening right here in Islamabad.
Rarely has Pakistan found itself right at the center of such a significant diplomatic effort.These were the first images sent to the media with the sound removed. The Americans meeting Pakistan’s prime minister, then the Iranians. What we have no images of is what happened next.
According to the White House, all three held direct trilateral talks.With stakes so high, trust so low, and a situation so delicate, the information coming out is deliberately limited.As the talks go into Sunday here, the world is waiting for a sign. Caroline Davis, BBC News, Islamabad.

Christian, for all the doubts, delays and danger, something significant,something historic is unfolding here in Islamabad. The two delegations went into the five-star Serena Hotel at about midday uh Pakistan time. It’s now just past 2:00 in the morning. We hear they’ve just started another round of trilateral talks Iran, the United States and Pakistan. And there is a report they’re going to try to get a document before dawn.
That’s in about 3 hours time. And aside from that, the technical experts are also meeting and that’s a significant engagement on areas like maritime traffic, financial assets, legal issues.
There’s definitely progress being made,but there are also reports of significant disagreements. What about Iran’s demand that the ceasefire has to extend to Lebanon? They’re saying that’s already been agreed because they wouldn’t be sitting down for talks otherwise. But the situation in Lebanon certainly doesn’t seem to support that.
But the biggest uh sticking point is said to be the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranians are pushing back against an American proposal that there be joint control of that that strategic waterway.
Will it be uh a reason for a breakdown or will there be a breakthrough before dawn? There’s a long way to go, but they’re making some progress.
